Clay County Divorce Records

Couples can file for divorce in Clay County by bringing an action to the Clay County Circuit Court’s Civil Department. The court handles all dissolution matters and stores the resulting records. Such records encompass the entire legal process of a marriage dissolution, including the initial petition, all orders issued by the court (concerning property division, support, or custody), any answers or responses filed by the parties, the required income and expense statements, notices of hearings, and the final decree of dissolution.

The public maintains access to Clay County divorce records under Missouri Court Operating Rule 2. A nuance to the law is that anyone can access these records, provided no legal exemptions exist. To this end, financial statements, minors’ information, sealed records, and Social Security numbers are considered exempt from the general public and are only released to legally authorized entities, such as the case parties.

Divorce records can be obtained via the Missouri Case.Net Portal or via the Clay County Circuit Clerk’s Office. It should be noted that for pre-July 2023 records on Case.Net, the public can typically only view the docket entries. To see the actual document images, it will be necessary to visit the courthouse to use public access terminals, or one can submit a copy request to the Circuit Clerk’s Office. Copies incur certain fees.
